Vancouver 2010 Day 11 in Pictures

March 19th, 2010

Its been a while since my last post, and I thought that I would post a few pictures taken on Day 11 of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. It was nice to get out and enjoy a very spring-like Vancouver in the middle of February.

Vancouver 2010 Torch Relay, Day 102

February 10th, 2010

I thought I’d share a couple of my photos from the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Torch relay as the torch arrived at Holland Park in Surrey, BC. (a 15 minute walk from my house). It was pretty cool to see the torch with 30,000 other revelers. I plan to do a more in depth post to summarize the 2010 Torch run experience.

YVR Olympic Signage

March 7th, 2009

I had the opportunity to head out to the airport and check out the new LED Olympic rings at the Vancouver Internation Airport last night. I was amazed at just how bright the rings are, and they are running on LED’s so we are not going to be flushing away a lot of money.

I was a little disappointed that the rings were not in colour, as they are capable of changing colours, but since its been running for a few days, its likely less distracting to drivers to leave it in white.

If you’re in Richmond, or near the airport, take a drive around the loop upto the departures, and you’ll get an impressive view of the rings, and they are very very bright.

The end of an era

December 2nd, 2008

Last week, I finally sold off my darkroom. I have not had the time for something that I once enjoyed so much, so it was time for my Enlarger, and other accessories to find a loving home. When we purchased our home in 2005, I had expected to have time to setup a semi-permanent darkroom in a corner of the garage. Three years later, and I still haven’t done that, and now with our first child on the way, its time to let it go.

My new “darkroom” is now my Ubuntu desktop PC, and my mobile darkroom… my macbook equipped with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. I have really enjoyed my switch to digital, and being a techie, I am more inclined to sit in front of my computer and edit a few photos when I have spare time. So I feel this is a win-win for me.

If you are curious, here were the parts that I had in my darkroom.

  • Saunders/LPL 6700 Dichroic Enlarger
  • Rodenstock Rodagon 50mm F2.8 lens
  • Saunders IC Enlarger timer
  • Print trays
  • Film Development tanks
  • Boxes of paper
  • misc. chemicals.

Next post in my photography series will be my review of the SMC Pentax DA* 50-135/F2.8 Lens.

My most used lens

November 21st, 2008

Recently, I was curious as to which lens I had been using the most.  A Quick search of the metadata in my images in Adobe Lightroom yeilded that my SMC Pentax 50mm/f1.4 is hands down my most used lens.

In fact, it leads the number 2 lens by more than double the images. That’s an overwhelming win for this lens, and despite what dpreview recently said, this lens produces some of the most pleasing images, even wide open. I imaging my results are quite a bit different than theirs since I don’t photograph resolution charts :)

This post is my attempt at a real world impression, not a review. Reviews photographing test charts, and other scientific measurements do nothing to show weather a lens will be considered good, or useful.

Pentax K100D Super and AA Batteries

January 29th, 2008

After about a month of usage, here are my initial findings on what you can expect in terms of battery life from your Pentax K100D Super digital SLR camera.

Using the set of Alkaline batteries included with the camera I was able to take approximately 90 shots with about 60-75% flash usage.

I also picked up two sets of 4 Energizer Lithium Ion single use batteries. I plan to keep these as the emergency set in my camera bag. I expect this set to perform close to, or exceed the anticipated number of shots in the manual. If I were to take a long trip, I would also consider picking up a set or two of CRV-3 Lithium batteries as these are supposed to yield 1000 – 1100 shots.
