New pictures have surfaced of the BlackBerry 8100 (Pearl) courtesy of Boy Genius. He also shot some video footage of the new device in action. I think this is the best looking BlackBerry yet, and could be a motorola-Q killer. For me personally, I would like to see a phone with this styling with the addition of a QWERTY keyboard, likely a combination of the 8700 + the pearl.
Here is a quick tip on how to get “poor mans” push email with your BlackBerry using BlackBerry Internet Service. This of course assumes that you are on an email system that runs procmail, and you have access to update your .procmailrc file in your home directory. If you run MS Exchange, then you are better off using BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server), where you will get more features.
I’ve had my blackberry for a couple of days now, and I have discovered a couple of must have Apps. All of the software mentioned here is 100% free.
Google Maps Mobile – a very addictive, and potentially expensive application. You can get directions and even see the satellite images overlayed. The maps are also the same resolution as the normal maps.google.com
Google talk for BlackBerry – Always on I M for your phone. Messaging is as fast as being at your desk, and it is a great way to stay in touch with friends who don’t like text messaging with their phones.
MidpSSH – A free SSH Client for mobile devices. The text may be small but with fast Internet access via EDGE, it sure works better than trying to walk somebody through something over the phone. And because of the 8700r ‘s full qwerty keyboard, I can admin a Linux server with ease from anywhere.
All be adding more apps to this list as I find them.
Do you have any essential BlackBerry applications that you cannot imagine your Berry without?
The battle of the smart phones. Now my old Treo 600 is about two years old now, and let me tell you it’s the worst phone that I have ever owned. But since I have a bit of a gadget obsession, and the idea of having decent speed Internet at my hip is appealing, so I decided to get another smart phone. This time its a blackberry, and I am starting with one of the nicest Blackberry’s that RIM has released.
I will be writing a review of the 8700r after I have had time to use it for a few more days.
