Since I switched to Optik TV a few months ago, I have had one glitch with the PVR that required a hard reset (which formats the hard drive). I’m posting the steps here in order to start building a repository of user documentation for Telus’ Optik TV platform.

1) Pull your set-top-box out so that you can see the connections on the back of it.
2) Unplug the power (small black round connection) so that all of the lights on the set-top-box go off.
3) In about 5 seconds, reconnect the power.
4) On the front of the set-top-box, press and hold down the OK button as well as the down arrow button at the same time. When you see the “LINK”, “HD”, “RECORD” lights on the front of the set-top-box blink rapidly, then you can release the two buttons.
5) If done properly, on your TV screen you should see a grey single gear.

After a couple of moments, the screen should advance to display 2 gears and a loading bar near the bottom of the screen. This indicates that your set-top-box is re-downloading the software necessary to perform the reboot. This stage will take quite a while to complete (approximately 30 minutes). Once that is done, you should see a screen with 3 dots which means the software is installed and your set-top-box is finalizing the settings and initializing.

Once complete, you will have a factory default configuration on your Optik TV set top PVR. Any recorded programs will be erased. The nice part of the Optik TV platform is that you will retain your PVR timers and series timers, and if you have configured remote recording control from the iPhone or website, it will still work.

If you are looking for a shoulder bag for a 15″ laptop and a lot of camera gear, look no further than the Thinktank Photo Urban disquise 50. The bag comfortably fits my 15″ Macbook Pro (spring 2010 model), two f2.8 zooms, two camera bodies, a flash, poceket wizards, and a ton of accessories. The best feature of the Urban Disguise 50 is all of the little pockets, and in my opinion, this is a major failing of other camera bags. Within a couple of days of getting the bag, I was on a plane off to Saskatchewan for a couple of days, and this bag handled my needs with ease. I was able to work out of the Urban Disguise 50 as if it was my portable office.

\

Now that its been a couple of months, I still find myself using this as my daily commuter bag. I have not been able to find another laptop bag that has as many accessory pockets, and I am able to carry my camera safely. I do find the Urban Disguise a little cumbersome for a general walk around and shoot bag (thats why I have the Think Tank Retrospective 20, future review coming soon.), as I find it a little to easy to put too much gear in it.

The Think Tank Urban Disguise 50 is a great choice if you are concerned about your bag making it on to a plane as your carry on. Its deceptivly compact. If I had to nitpick, my one issue is that there is no pocket that can accomodate a manila folder with a couple of sheets of paperwork. Sometimes I need to carry forms, etc. and I find that putting them into the laptop compartment can lead to them becomming mangled if I am not super vigilant about pulling the paper out before inserting my laptop.

Pro’s:

Tons of space, lots of pockets, organization is great.

My everyday bag

Can work out of this bag easily.

Holds a spring 2010 15″ mbp no problem

Comfortable shoulder strap

Holds a ton of gear

Fits under the seat on a west jet 737 flight!

Cons

Can get really heavy!

Can be kind of large depending on what you have in the front pockets

No macbook power supply pocket, front pockets work, but not optimal.

Can tip over in the trunk of the car

Its been 3 weeks as of this writing since I picked up my Olympus PEN E-P1, and I think its time for a quick review.

Olympus E-P1 top view.

First Impressions

From the moment that I took this camera out of the box, I was impressed. The build quality is fantastic (lots of metal) and the styling is spot on. It’s the small manual digital camera that I have always wanted, and it has a big sensor which is icing on the cake. Like most people, I thought that I was going to miss the viewfinder, and that has not been the case. The LCD is bright, and easy to compose with, and its a breeze to manual focus with as well.

Subsequent to purchasing the E-P1, I found out that the Four-Thirds and the micro Four-Thirds mount used by the PEN are the most adaptable mounts on the market. I have since purchased and been busy playing with my Pentax K-mount to m4/3 mount adaptor, and its a lot of fun.

Usage

The PEN is really easy to use, thanks to the smart button layout, and the dual control wheels for aperture and shutter speed. The menu system is intuitive and easy to use while shooting.

Auto-focus is significantly improved thanks to the latest firmware update, and even before the update, AF was better than most big Internet camera reviewers would lead you to believe.

Olympus E-P1 rear

While the LCD is good, it could be a lot better, but I think Olympus put a lower-resolution LCD in the PEN to help with battery life, and for what I use the PEN for, its fine for my shooting needs.

The nice thing about only having an LCD for composition, is it allows you to use some angles that you wouldn’t otherwise consider using. I can put the PEN right on the ground, compose and shoot without having to lay in the dir to get a shot.

The 14-42 Kit Lens

The kit lens surprised me. It was sharper than I thought it would be, and it has some pretty nice bokeh. Its such a compact lens, its easy to under estimate its abilities.

I do however feel that Olympus should be selling the E-P1 with a 25mm 1.4 lens, (50mm equiv). I think the PEN would really excel and impress with a nice fast normal prime. Panasonic does make a 20mm 1.7, and Olympus does make a 17mm f2.8 (34mm equiv). I plan to try both at some point (hopefully) and purchase one of them for my daily camera carrying needs.

Image Quality

If you are going to buy a digital camera without an on-board flash, its going to need some decent low-light capabilities, and the PEN does really well for a smaller than APS-C sensor up to ISO 1600. If needed, you can increase the ISO to 3200, and 6400 ISO, the images are noisy, but still usable. The noise in the high ISO images from the PEN is actually quite pleasing, it has an almost film-like quality, which works well when converted to black and white.

Its 12mp I feel is just about perfect, the images are a bit smaller than the .DNG raw files out of my K20D, so its nice to save on some space where I can.

Conclusion

If you are considering a PEN, you won’t be disappointed. I think its a great camera to help a beginner learn composition, as its allows you a bit more freedom to compose. Its also a bit easier to adjust exposure in manual mode, which will take some of the fear away from new manual mode shooters.

After three weeks, I’m very happy with mine. It has made photography fun, and its a great source of inspiration. In the short time that I have had my PEN, I find that I am making better photographs, and trying new angles that I would have never tried before.

Happy shooting.

Using your Mac, Linux or windows box, you can automatically manipulate images from the command line using ImageMagick. Most often, I use it to easily add borders to my images. I know I could use a plugin for Aperture, but I often use the “out of camera” JPEG files produced by shooting RAW+JPEG. The best part of the script that I am going to show you is that you can even run it on a web server where your website is hosted to batch adjust images, all in a matter of seconds.

I don’t use windows, so I will attempt to provide the best instructions that I can for Linux and MAC OSX based systems.

On linux systems, specificly Ubuntu Linux, you can install ImageMagick by issuing the following from the command line:

sudo apt-get install imagemagick

Thats it. Imagemagick is installed. You can skip down to the post-installation steps.

On the Mac, you need to make sure that you have Xcode installed, which will allow your Mac to compile the ImageMagick source code into an executable file that you can call from a script. XCode can be installed from the Leopard or Snow Leopard DVD that came with your Mac.

After XCode has been installed, you will need to download and install “Port“. After Port is successfully installed, you can use it to update ImageMagick:

Update port tree:

sudo port selfupdate

(if you are like me, and you installed MacPorts under 10.5, but didn’t update it when you moved to snow leopard, you can update your installed ports with: sudo port upgrade –force installed ). I had to follow the steps at: http://trac.macports.org/wiki/Migration to get my ports install back on track.

Once you have MacPort sorted out, its time to install ImageMagick:

sudo port install ImageMagick

After ImageMagick is installed, you can use a simple script such as the following to automatically add borders to your images:

put the following text into a text file:

#!/bin/bash

mkdir ./output
for i in $( ls ./*.JPG ); do
convert $i -bordercolor black -border 25×25 output/$i
done

Save the file as addborder.sh and place it in a folder that’s convienient for you. I have a scripts folder under my home, so I can reference the script via: ~/scripts/addborder.sh

In order to run the script, you will need to make it executable, from a terminal issue the following command:

chmod a+x ~/scripts/addborder.sh

The code in the script will create a folder called output where it will put the new files with the boder. The script does not alter the origional files. To use the script, simple open up a terminal window, change to the directory with your images and run:

~/scripts/addborder.sh

Voila, you should now have a folder called output within your image folder containing the modified files.

ImageMagick is a very powerful set of tools for modifying images, and the example above is only scratching the surface. Other uses of ImageMagick could be resizing images for posting to the web, adding a watermark, or all three combined.
