Ubuntu tips and workarounds

October 30th, 2006

edgythumb.jpgHere are some solutions that I have found to some common problems with Ubuntu Edgy Eft. All of them are easy fixes that you can do in about 5 minutes.

Installing the Citrix ICA client. The Citrix ICA client does not work out of the box on Ubuntu Edgy Eft. The problem is that it relies on Motif for the setup and management GUI. Here are the steps. To start, you need to download client from Citrix and unpack in its own folder.

sudo apt-get install libmotif3
sudo ./setupwfc

Flash keeps crashing Firefox. I noticed that after I had installed the flash player plugin, sites with flash ads would crash my browser. For some reason, the OEM/Alternate install CD set my graphics card to use 16 bit colour. To fix this, I had to change the default depth from 16 to 24 and everything is fine so far.

Ubuntu 6.10 “Edgy Eft” Released

October 27th, 2006

edgythumb.jpgThe latest version of Ubuntu was just released yesterday, and it does not disappoint. The most noticeable changes are to the artwork. This is the best looking Ubuntu release to date, and one of the most consistently themed desktop Linux distribution available.

One of the most significant changes was made under the hood. “init.d” has been replaced by “Upstart” which cuts the normal boot up time in half.

The major changes include:

  • GNOME 2.16
  • TomBoy
  • F-Spot
  • Evolution 2.8.0
  • Firefox 2.0 (just released October 24th)
  • Open Office 2.0.4
  • Gaim 2.0 Beta 3.1
  • Orca
  • A new theme
  • Rounded window borders
  • Upstart

December 19th, Showcase HD, National Geographic HD

October 13th, 2006

Alliance Atlantis, who owns National Geographic Channel, and Showcase has announced that the HD versions of these two channels will launch to Canadian consumers on December 19th.

Rumors abound that claim that Food TV HD, and HGTV HD will also launch soon, both of these are also Alliance Atlantis channels, and were granted their HD license ammendment on July 6th 2006.

For you Leafs nuts out there, Leafs TV HD is now available on Bell ExpressVu channel 848.  I do not subscribe to thi’m stis channel, so I cannot comment.

Personally, I’m still waiting for Bell to make HDnet available to subs.

ExpressVu Launches 4 new (non HD) Channels

October 4th, 2006

ExpressVu LogoBell ExpressVu has launched 4 new channels. They are not HD, but sub’s have been waiting a while for them. The new channels are 389,390, 404, and 419. All appear to be sports related.

Channel 389 – WILD TV: I am not sure what the programming for this channel is yet. I will update once I know more.

Channel 390 – FIGHT: The Fight Network. Exactly as the name describes, UFC, Mixed martial arts, boxing etc. Sounds like fun.

Channel 404 – GOL TV: Soccer!

Channel 419 – WRN: World Fishing Network, I havn’t watched this channel yet, hopefully its not all east coast Bass fishing.

I’m still waiting to see HDNet in my guide, stay tunned for that announcement.
