What HD Channels are available in Canada?

August 24th, 2006

tvIts a good question, and Digital Home Canada has posted a great guide as to which channels are available, and which TV providers they are available from. As expected Bell ExpressVu and Rogers Cable lead the pack with the most HD channels available.

Have a look at the guide if you are curious.

Just wondering, with all the talk about HD coming to cable, does anyone know a date when this will take affect or do we have to wait another 3 yrs.
It seems although we are making progress in the right direction, its a slow one which is leaving us in the dust compared to the States which are far more intelligent in the art of media coverage and TV and move quickly for the consumers benefit.

The main problem with distributing HD over cable is the current lack of bandwidth. The cable companies need to get rid of their analog cable subsribers before they can free up much needed bandwidth. Each analog channel space can hold many HD channels.

I would expect to see Shaw and Rogers start to distribute their digital cable terminals to their “holdout” customers at no charge. I’m unsure as to what the current percentage of Digital Vs. Analog customers are, but I would expect that once they get down to 20% or less analog customers you will start to see the free digital boxes flow.
