ExpressVu 9200/9220 Problems

A lot of users have been reporting issues with their newer HD PVR units from Bell. It seems to be an issue with the hard drive that causes stuttering during playback.

To try and figure out what may be happening, I’m asking that users who are having this problem to follow the procedure below and report what drive signature their unit is reporting

  1. Press Menu on remote
  2. Choose option #6 System Setup
  3. Choose option #3 Diagnostics
  4. Goto “Counters”
  5. Use the page down button on the remote to view #10, hard drive.

Please report the ID of your drive in the comments below and weather or not you are having the stuttering/skipping during playback issue, and when approximatly you purchased / aquired your 9200.

I have drive ID 0×6132 and my unit is working perfectly. 0×6132 is a discontinued Western Digital Hard Drive, and 0×6102 is a Maxtor Hard Drive, which is belived to be the source for the skipping playback problem.

Bell is claiming that new firmware will be out at the beginning of May, but this date has been slipping for at least 2 months. My guess is July, which is a tad pessimistic.

If you talk to tech support, make sure to ask them when the new firmware will be out.

I have drive 0×6132 and it has been working fine, but with the green pixelation a few times. I have had my system since November 2005.

Bought my 9200 Apr 22 from BellWorld in Oakville. Noticed the freezing problem right away. Surfed and found this thread. Excellent, informative discussion. I believe it’s the drive, not software.

    My HD id is 0×6102

Further to the discussions on http://www.apeman.org/2006/01/05/37/
I just spoke to a Bell rep and was told new target date is May 9 for a resolution to the freezing issue. Was not told whether resolution was drive or software related.

  8. April 28th, 2006 at 10:28 | #8

Thats great news Huff. Lets hope that Bell sticks to that time frame for the release. Hopefully they are able to get around the 0×6102 hard drive issue without loosing any quality. The 9200 / 9220 is a great box when it is working.

I talked with “Julian” a 2nd tier tech support guy and he said as of yesterday they had no idea when there’d be a resolution. (I originally called right after I bought it a couple weeks ago and was told April 18th so I’d guess they’re just trying to buy weeks at time in tech support)

Anyway, he said a couple things interesting (besides saying you bought it, its yours… doesn’t that frost you). The first is that they are trying to “adjust” the encoding on transmission to correct the problem (can you say hail mary) and the other was that the complete information isn’t being saved to the drive as a consequence. As far as incomplete info being stored, if you stop right after a pause/skip and back it up, the playback at that point invariably does not skip at the same point, so I’m not sure what’s incomplete. As far as playing with the encoding, I’d have thought this is pretty standardized and probably not that much wiggle room there.

I for one am getting pretty annoyed being reminded every 10 – 20 seconds (trying to watch playback) of what a hunk of junk I spent $600 on.

    Boot Strap Version: 1110MBJD
    Hardware ID: 0×6102

    Stuttering Occurs.

Got this unit today and it replaced 2 other defective 9200′s that I returned within the last 2 months.

I hope this is fixed soon.

I don’t need the damn HD yet. I’m going to try to give it back right away.

David, probably a good idea to return it. It is anybody’s guess when the new firmware will be released.

You might be better off with the non HDTV dual tuner pvr that ExpressVu offers. I don’t recall the model #, but it is called a “PVR Plus”.

    (same post at: http://apeman.org/2006/01/05/37/ )

Harddrive ID is 0×6102 (yup, you guessed it!) and stutters like crazy.

I’m new to this discussion, I just bought my 9200 two days ago, completely oblivious to this problem. Being an computer geek/tech, I have to agree this sooooo does seem like a harddrive/bus problem. And not something anyone’s going to resolve with software.

As noted by another poster, this stuttering doesnt occur in the same place everytime you play back the same recording. It is my belief that the actual recording is in tact, but the harddrive can’t spin or buffer enough in advance to accomodate for bandwith.

So, we can wait for Bell to fix it… or… who’s going to figure out how we can fix this problem on our own?

I’d love nothing more than to be able to swap out the harddrive myself, if I thought it would solve this problem. But I suspect that plunking a newer/better drive in it isn’t as simple, or as user freindly as doing the same in a PC. Anyone know of any resource on if this is possible, and if so, how to do this?

Hi all, I have an OT question. Yesterday, it seems my HDMI port stopped working. When turning the TV on the picture is scrambled. I tried unplugging everything, but to no avail. Has anyone seen this? I am trying to figure out if it is the TV or the 9200.

Same issue here. I’ve been watching the discussion groups and waiting for a firmware upgrade. My drive ID is 0×6102 and I experience the stutter problem.. actually it appears more like a very short entry into pause mode, sometimes with picture breakup.
I have not called Bell support as I had been hoping that a firmware fix would happen soon. The firmware upgrade on my 5200 solved all sorts of problems, and it now operates almost perfectly.

    May 8th, 2006 at 05:57 | #18

To BHLombardy, I’ve been following this issue here and at:
    http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39113
(apologies if I’m not supposed to reference another forum here, just trying to help). There are people there who have found correct HD models that work and successfully replaced them themselves. But they are out of production and hard to find.

Very interesting note, one person has confirmed this weekend that a BEV support rep actually acknowledged this issue is specifically related to a batch of hard drives. I am calling BEV back May 9, the date I was given for a fix.

I got a call from Bell ExpressVu yesterday, the automated robot that called said that there was going to be an update in the next 48 hours to add Name Based Recording. Channel 230 is also running the How to use NBR on your 9200 promo.

Hopefully there is a fix for the pause skip issue.

Random surfing… 0×6132 drive and my 9200 is working fine. Glad I didn’t get a bad one, I’d be some kinda pissed if it was skipping like the others are. My old 5xxx series PVRs used to do the same thing, replaced 3 of them, but tech support always said that the memory was corrupted. That was getting bad enough we replaced two of them with outright new purchases and since then we’ve been running smoothly

SDYD – There is new firmware out now. Hold down the power button on the front of your 9200 and it will reboot and download the new firmware. Software version should be 143 old version is 142.

Can anybody confirm if it fixes the stuttering problem?  (My unit never had the problem).

Got the automated robot call 2 days ago and today noticed the Name Based Recording NOW WORKS, also the ‘launchpad’ feature is active. The ‘Customer Support’ option in the Main Menu is still greyed out

Guess what…watched 15 minutes of ‘The Daily Show’ that I recorded last night and only 1 skip!! (still 1 too many but it does seem to be better) COULD OTHERS PLEASE CONFIRM THIS?

Still waiting for a phone call to see if the callerID thing works…see I have no firends so might be a while before I know :-(

Also ‘TV enhancements’ menu that I don;t remember being there before in ‘Installation’ sub menu

Software version V143MBJD-N (previous version V142)

Received 143 firmware. Stuttering gone. Tried pause/play live tv, play pre-recorded show, even record 2 shows while watching 3rd recorded one. All stutter free.

While I’m happy I can now view recorded shows pain-free, I would still like an explanation from BEV for how this issue was fixed and assurance that there has been *no* loss whatsoever in audio/video quality. Let’s hope we do not now own a “semi-HD” PVR.

    May 11th, 2006 at 05:42 | #27

Received 143 firmware. Stuttering is still happenning especially on HD channels. BEV has no answer as to why it is happenning. This has become very frustrating. Does anybody else have the stuttering?

    Mike, I followed instructions at:
    http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/forum/showpost.php?p=371401&postcount=414
for doing a “hard” re-boot (kudos to geneduffy). This cleared my stuttering.

  29. May 11th, 2006 at 19:32 | #29

    Mike,

I havn’t watched much TV since the update, but so far everything seems fine in terms of quality.

  30. Dan
    May 16th, 2006 at 18:42 | #30

Mine was better, then terrible stuttering returned on some recorded programs. Followed the ‘hard reset’ instructions and seems to be perfect now.

One problem: Some older timers set manually that are programmed to start early now display the name of the preceding program on the PVR list. I guess it takes the guide info from what starts the program, and not what was intended. So I;ve had to reprogram some of these timers. An annoyance but not major

CallerID still nowhere to be seen. Why the problem with such a simple feature. Crappy $99 StarChoice receivers do this…

  31. May 18th, 2006 at 15:51 | #31

    Dan,

I have also noticed the same issue with the programs being named after the previous show. It dosn’t happen 100% of the time.

I am having a problem with sound. When I turn on the tv, and then the 9200, sometimes there is no audio. I have to turn everything off, wait a minute and then sometimes it comes back. It usually comes back if I change channels to 841 (MC-HD) and then flip back to the channel I was on. This is with my tv connected via HDMI. I’m also getting the sound via the HDMI Cable. I’m going to try bypassing HDMI for sound with some RCA cables and see if it helps.

Too bad the firmware added a couple of bugs. I was finding the 9200 almost bug free prior to v142.

  32. Dan
    May 20th, 2006 at 05:27 | #32

I haven’t even got my HDTV yet so not using the HDMI but I don;t have sound issues via RCA out. The analog channel scan also works now in this firmware, but the choices for naming channels are limited to US networks! Still, getting rid of the stuttering was the major annoyance. I hope there’s enough pressure on BEV to keep working at fixing the other stuff.

  33. May 25th, 2006 at 23:44 | #33

I was reading in the Bell TV magazine that if you have sound issues to try and reboot the reciever by holding down the power button for 8 seconds. It seems to have helped so far. Sound would only drop out if the reciever was left on channels 252, 600, and 841 (very common channels in my house).

Now that I have gotten used to the name based recording I don’t think I could do with out it. It seemed a bit awkward at first, but now it makes a lot of sense and I have to say kudo’s to Bell Express Vu for making these changes.

Hopefully the 9200 / 9220 has a long life of feature enhancements ahead of it.

I own a Bell ExpressVu 9200 and have one complaint and would appreciate any feedback. The unit has hard drive HD 0×6102 and software version V143. I am experiencing a “freeze” only on the “back” button (X4 speed) and only while watching “Live” HD channels. It works fine on live, standard definition channels and also on pre-recorded events. I have also called bell with no explanation and only a promise to follow up in a week, something that didn’t happen. This seems to fit the “hard drive” problem discussed in this forum. Any comments or direction would be welcomed?

    Hi Peter –

I don’t know if it is the same issue as you are having or not, but I do sometimes notice that when I use the 10 seconds back or 30 seconds forward it dosn’t appear to do anything, the screen just pauses for a second or so, usually multiple presses get you skipped ahead to where you want to go (past the commercial).

If I am way of here, please let me know.

I actually went into a Bell store this afternoon and played with a 9220 receiver set up on display. Much to the surprise of the staff I was able to duplicate the same problem that I am having on my machine on theirs. While watching HD channels with HD content, when pressing the back button once, instead of the picture reversing at the 4X speed which it should, the picture freezes. This happens only with live “tv” as there is no problem with pre-recorded video and no problem with a SD channel with SD content. I am rethinking this is a software problem, because if it was a hardware problem, it should give me the same problem with pre-recorded video.

  37. July 3rd, 2006 at 20:35 | #37

    Hi Peter –

I agree, it sure sounds like a software problem. It looks like there may still be porblems with drive id 0×6102. I was not able to re-produce the error with my unit (Drive ID 0×6132). Did the Bell store have the same drive ID as you?

Thanks for pointing it out, Bell reps do read this site from time to time, so hopefully they will become aware of it shortly (If they don’t know about it already).

  38. Peter
    July 4th, 2006 at 18:31 | #38

Yes, the hard drive at the Bell store was a 0X6102, the same as is in my machine. Do you suspect it may be related to the hard drive, a software issue or a combination of the two? Thanks for your response.

    Peter

  39. July 5th, 2006 at 09:14 | #39

    Hi Peter –

Bell did manage to fix the recording problem with the 0×6102 drives, so I don’t see why they couldn’t fix the problem that you are having as well, so I suspect its software related.

If there was a problem with the drive then I would expect it to do the same thing with recorded data.

I have the latest firmware and was wondering if anyone knows what HDMI version is part of this? 1.1 or 1.2? I am having a problem with my TV when I set the 9200 to 720p or 1080i where a 1/8th inch section at the top is scattered white lines, almost like the whole screen shifts down…only with HDMI…with component, everything is okay. Panasonic told me the HDMI version on BEV 9200 is probably 1.1 and needs upgrading. BEV tech support cannot tell me which version it is. Any help would be appreciated.

  41. July 7th, 2006 at 09:41 | #41

    Todd –

I’m pretty sure that the 9200/9220 is using HDMI version 1.2. Version 1.2 of the HDMI spec came out in August 2005. HDMI 1.2a was released in December 2005. The current version is 1.3.

I would keep trying with Bell to see if they can find out what version of the HDMI spec the unit is compatible with.

    Hi
My 9200 H/D ID is 0X6132 and I have never had the stuttering problem. My question is, my software version is 144 so does that mean I recieved the fix for the stuttering problem on a machine that never had the problem? Would the software fix only address the 0X6102 hard drives? I guess what I’m wondering is if they had to mess with the compression and bitrates to resolve the stuttering issue resulting in lower quality did the machines without the problem (0X6132) have this software update and if so did it affect the quality of the recordings. I guess this sounds a bit paranoid and I should be thankful I never had the problem with this unit. I should point out this is my 3rd 9200. The first 2 skipped and stuttered on playback but I didn’t have the H/D ID info like I have now so I am not able to tell you which hard drive was in the first 2.

  45. September 4th, 2006 at 21:22 | #45

    Hi Steve –

Since the 0×6102 problem affected both HD and non-HD recording, I don’t belive that Bell would have messed with the bitrates for everybody by doing a software upgrade. If Bell wanted to lower the bitrates, they could simply do this with the satellites, and it *could* happen at anytime.

Since Bell has intimate knowledge of the hardware, they could fix the problem with a software work-around for the 0×6102.

Since the v143 update, and then the v144 update I have not noticed any loss in quality. Most of the problems I have noticed with HD have been with the networks, specifically CTV.

I have the 0×6132 model with the 144 version.
Recently (last month) i noticed i’mg getting odd pixelation colours popping up on NON HD channels. It will occur on an HD channel when the commercial is NON HD. Has anyone noticed this? I’m running HDMI cables and a new Sony LCD tv.

    Hi Apeman,

I purchased the 9200/9220 this week and I’m having bad drop-out problems. Live TV is fine, but playback of anything recorded stutters badly (unwatchable, really). I have the 0X6102 and my software version is V144MBJD-N. It seemed that this was the version that had the fix, so I’m not sure what to do. I haven’t called BEV yet. I was wondering if there is someone in particular I should be speaking to.

I also have a second TV (in the bedroom) that will not accept the signal. The installer said that it is because the TV is analog. The 2nd TV is 20 years old, but it was top of the line at the time. This same TV worked on my old receiver, but apparently, because the is a digital signal, it is not compatible.
    Any thoughts?

I am also having trouble watching live TV while recording a program on another channel. I get a message saying that changing the channel will cancel the recording of the current program. I thought I could record two programs and watch a third. When I called Tech support they told me that I could not watch a live channel while recording on another. Is this true?

One last thing… When I set up programs to record, some of them appear on the list with the name crossed out. What does this mean? Is it a duplicate? Is it still going to record?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Doris

  48. November 6th, 2006 at 21:47 | #48

    Hi Doris -

I would call Bell and let them know about the problems that you are having, especially considering how new the unit is. You should not be seeing any skipping.

I think your installer was being cheap/lazy. They only get paid to connect 1 TV to the 9200. Your old TV should work fine as TV2, as long as it can accept basic cable, which most should. I have a cheap-o citizen TV/VCR combo connected to the TV2 port of my 9200 and it works like a champ.

Are you by any chance using the existing cable companies cabling to connect to the second TV? If so, the cable companies splitter on the side of your house is likely interfering with your signal, most are designed to only let the signal flow one way at certain frequencies.

As for the lines in your recordings, that usually means that the program is either a duplicate (already recorded), not a new episode or there is a scheduling conflict. highlighting the item with the cursor bar, and pressing the select button should tell you why it is being skipped.

    Hope that helps

Hi I have had this skipping problem for 8 months with the 0×6102. has anyone heard lately if they have a solution? I also have a few channels that are very fuzzy? jumpy? and extremely annoying considering what we pay for this product.

  50. January 9th, 2007 at 00:54 | #50

    Hi BJ54,

The skipping problem was fixed a couple of months ago. Have you tried doing a full reset of your unit? Unplug the coax connectors and the power. Wait about 10 minutes, then reconnect everything. Do not turn on the unit for 10 minutes. After that, you should have the latest software installed.

As for your fuzzy channels, I don’t think that it is related to the 9200. It could be a bad installation. Was your dish professionally installed?

    Cheers- apeman
