ExpressVu 9200/9220 Problems
A lot of users have been reporting issues with their newer HD PVR units from Bell. It seems to be an issue with the hard drive that causes stuttering during playback.
To try and figure out what may be happening, I’m asking that users who are having this problem to follow the procedure below and report what drive signature their unit is reporting
- Press Menu on remote
- Choose option #6 System Setup
- Choose option #3 Diagnostics
- Goto “Counters”
- Use the page down button on the remote to view #10, hard drive.
Please report the ID of your drive in the comments below and weather or not you are having the stuttering/skipping during playback issue, and when approximatly you purchased / aquired your 9200.
I have drive ID 0×6132 and my unit is working perfectly. 0×6132 is a discontinued Western Digital Hard Drive, and 0×6102 is a Maxtor Hard Drive, which is belived to be the source for the skipping playback problem.
Bell is claiming that new firmware will be out at the beginning of May, but this date has been slipping for at least 2 months. My guess is July, which is a tad pessimistic.
If you talk to tech support, make sure to ask them when the new firmware will be out.
9200 fool me once shame on you! Fool me approx12 9200′s later shame on me, boy am I a big fool to even stay with Expressvu!! I have had nothing but problem after problem with this receiver type. I have owned this from the beginning Oct 2005. They still haven’t fixed the HDMI handshake (HDCP) when viewing recorded HD content (loss of video when fstfwrd / rewind) forcing me to view via component cables. Every one that I have received for replacement has this 0×6102 Diamond Max 10 model # 6L250S0 250GB SATA150 HDD RoHS Compliant Version Serial ATA 1.5Gb/s 16MB buffer. There was only 1 out of all 12 that had the 0×6132 signature but I had to send that back because the second tuner failed. Expressvu got me by the bag I would of switched out to Rogers but they still don’t support the 8300HD multi-room.
i’m on my third 9200 in only 8 months…..last 5 years? i doubt it…..yes first one stuttered(turned out later was firmware) second one good until HDMI port
stopped working….thanks! so now im on my third…….will my warranty restart at time i received it?…..my bills average $140 a month…..support at bell not just unfriendly but downright nasty……whats my option? rogers/shaw?
ha!! everyone i know who had that took it back……guess im stuck…..well i suppose it IS canada…..no competition. and were not allowed to buy andwatch U.S systems….FREEDOMMMMMMMMM!
I just jumped in on this while researching some other stuff on the 9200.
It blows my mind that this problem has gone on for more than a year and that the unit I rented in December 2006 has the hard drive that apparently is causing the problem (ID 0×6102).
My software is V149 and I still get stuttered playback whenever both me and the wife try to use PVR playback at the same time.
Considering this and the fact that Bell screwed me around with billing I’m not impressed and would have gone to Rogers if cable was available in my area.
Oh us bell reps are not that bad, BUT just as a question for a lark, anyone know if you can straight up replace the Hard Drives in those 9220′s (500gig maxtor or something), im 3 days into my expressvu training, i was originaly in Residential service, im training to be able to sell these VU’s to the masses. It is a good system, if i had LOS on Nimiq 2 I would prob get it myself but alas, no tv and only beer make Eddie something something.
Call in if your in ontario, you will get my office.
Happy Viewing

Hey Everybody,
So far, I like my 9200 receiver… However, I have noticed that since hooking it up to my Sony Rear Proj LCD TV with HDMI cables two days ago I have been spending alot of time re-booting it to get picture and sound (goes to a black screen when you change TV inputs to watch a DVD and come back). BEV said they were aware of the issue and that they were working on it and in the interim to use component cables…
Anyone else seen, or better yet, resolved this issue?
This weekend my HDMI port stopped working. It had worked without problem from December 2006 until now. I can get a picture via component cables. Bell said they were aware of the issue, their engineers were working on it, and that there was not a problem with the receiver. (They initially tried to say that the HDMI cable was bad, but backed off this when I swapped the one from my DVD player and still did not have signal via HMDI.
Anyone got this problem fixed? Is a new receiver a reasonable option?
I find it hard to believe that a software glitch would cause the HDMI port to stop working altogether.
I would ask for a replacement receiver.
Cheers.
Hi Apeman, found your website and think it is absolutely awesome area for tips on the 9200.
Question: Is it possible to download recorded shows to a computer? I am running out of disk space on the PVR, but do not want to loose the programs.
Thanks Greg
Hi Greg -
There is no easy way to extract the recorded shows off of the 9200 PVR. The only option that you have is to connect a computer with a capture card to the TV2 output and record your shows one by one to the computer.
The data on the hard disk of the 9200 is the encrypted MPEG-2 DVB stream right from the satellite.
Cheers, Chris
Hi, Can anyone tell me how to get HDMI to work on my 9200, Black screen, HdMI to DVI , cable to panasonic projector….
Who makes this PVR for Bell? Does any on know?
Has anybody tried a hardrive upgrade? Bigger, faster?
Thanks
HELP! I’ve recently became a single parent and I don’t know all this tech stuff. I have a 9200 receiver that has been giving us problems ever since the cleaning woman blew a fuse (not figuratively). The receiver seems to boot up for a minute then stop all together . It will do this on its own every few minutes. We can only get satellite where we live. When the receiver seems to be starting up it isn’t enough time to get any TV. My kids are frantic
I’ve tried the unplugging and waiting then plugging back in without a change.
Update on my HDMI issue. I sent an email to Kevin Crull (president residential services- email kevin.crull@bell.ca). I was quite impressed that I received a call back from someone from his office within 24 hours who listened to my problems. I was told that tech support would call, but what actually happened was that the contact phoned me back the next day and said that a new receiver was on the way.
I have received a new receiver and the HDMI input works fine on this one. They have a happy customer again.
@SAN MAN -
The ExpressVu 9200 HD PVR is manufactured by Echo Star, who owns Dish Network in the US.
You cannot upgrade the hard drive in the 9200 as far as I am aware.
@Janet -
I would call Bell and ask for a replacement. Without the reciever, you cannot use their service, so it would be in their best interest to get you back up and running.
Give them a call and see what they have to say.
@Dean
Thats excellent news. Thanks for giving us an update on what happens. Far to often, users post complaints, but never follow up to let others know how the company, in this case Bell worked to resolve their problem.
Thanks for posting Kevin Crull’s email address, hopefully other dis-satisfied users will send him a polite note outlining their troubles so that Bell can address their issues.
Cheers!
I’ve had my 9200 since december but just got a new Samsung plasma using HDMI. Finding that the sound blacks out for a second or two every few minutes. Worse on PVR playback. Very seldom on live TV. Hard-drive is 0×6032 and firmware is V150. Anyone else having the same issue?
@alex – There was a lot of users mentioning audio dropouts a few firmware versions ago. Seeing as you are at v145, have you tried rebooting the pvr, it may not have rebooted since it loaded the new firmware, and it may not be active yet.
Are you getting audio dropouts on just the HD channels, or on all channels?

I started renting BEV Dual HD PVR April 2006. After Severe and frequent picture breakup they sent me a replacement a few months ago. Recentley bought a Bravia connected with HDMI and started getting severe and frequent sound breakup on both live and recorded shows on the HD channel. My firmware is V150.
In following the instructions on finding the hard drive version from the top post, May 2006, when I go to “counters” it says only “10)successful Downloads:2.”
Can you advise if there is a new place to find out the drive version.
Frontline support went back and forth (putting me on hold each time) with their tech support and concluded by telling me they were aware of the problem and i should go buy component cables instead of using HDMI…ahhh the HD experience.
The verbiage they used made it sound like it was an “industry wide problem” (their words). I will be pursuing further with Bell on Monday.
When I mentioned it was a rental, installed by them, using their HDMI cable and they should come and replace/connect it…well – that didn’t fly. They are going to give me a $20 credit each month (if i phone them every month)
I am surprised that this issue has gone on so long. Has anyone had any response from BEV that they have a conclusion in site?
HDMI problem it start on June 2007 and I have my PVR 9200 since Dec 2006. I call Bell 9 times after that I told them that I will not pay anymore and since July I have a full credit of 62$ each month until it will be fix.
I have had a 9200 for about 2 years, if I go to counters, I see that “previous software” = 149
What I get are 3 things:
1- Sound will cut in and out for a split second while watching live TV on various HD and non HD channels. If I reverse live TV and try to listen to the exact spot where the sound cut out, it never happens twice and the same spot…can get pretty pad on certain stations such as 851 Sportsnet
2- When doing PIP, I often get a purple border to the PIP window (when it is in its 2 smalles sizes) , as if the feed was weak into that channel, it is a tsrange thing. Audiotronics sent in there service guys to feed my TV (SXRD 55 in) a clean source, it passed all the tests. I tried to explain this about 3 times to XPressvu tech support and I had to give up talking to them, or else I would have killed myself. They never agree that maybe the box is screwed. Anyways, this is a minor thing…but annoying whne you pay 600 for a box.
3- Seems as though my Fan goes on a lot on the 9200, even after many hours after shut down.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Pierre
Drive 0×6102 just started skipping (11 Aug 08)
p.s. Bell web site sucks!
Bought my 9200 in March 07, this thread started 11 months prior. I feel duped by Bell knowingly selling me a defective product. If Bell were Ford or GM they would have to extend a recall to consumers. Maybe I should have purchased extended warranty but on the other hand I did buy from a legit company not a junkie behind the liquor store. Is there a Lawyer out there thats want’s to take these crooks on pro-bono?
Drive 0×6102 skipping really badly lately. Bought off of a friend a week ago.
9200 PVR Hard drive had failed….0521 fatal error.
Bought a new hard drive off ebay for $70CAD and boom I’m back in business.
Eff U Bell
I have the 0×6132, and it loses audio on the playback, sometimes as often as every 30 seconds. The unplugging sometimes works for a while, but it always comes back. I have had my PVR since Dec 2007.
Dave what hard drive did u purchase I also need a new one
I bought a Maxtor MaxLine Plus II 250GB SATA Hard Drive 7Y250M off ebay for $40. It is an exact fit, the receiver recognized it right away, formatted it, and my wife was happy again.
Dave – how big was the drive you took out?
It was a 250GB as well.
bought a 9200 dual pvr in 2005 and nnot able to pvr or pause live tv bell expressvu tells me that the harddrive is gone and need to buy a refurbished receiver from them error code 024 is there any other alternative that anyone knows of ?
Replace the hard drive.
@Dave
my 9200 hard drive just malfunctioned 3 months after the wrranty expired. Which hard drive did you purchase, and is it easy to install?
@Kevin
It is very easy to install, the hard drive was on ebay and its a Maxtor MaxLine Plus II 250GB SATA Hard Drive 7Y250M. I am sure that a bigger hard drive would work too. The drive I installed is still working a 100% one year later. Give it a shot, we know that Bell won’t be helping you out.
i have an ox6132, can i get a new hard drive for this from ebay
I don’t know what the problem is but lately I can’t access the shows I’ve recorded. I’ve recorded shows and they don’t show up when I try to access them.
seems like your hard drive is done, bell will send you another 9200 for a cost of $149 which would be a refurbished one, you have to send the one you have back to them
@Phil Kersey
imy 9200 reciever sound acts the same way
if i switch to the other tuner it works fine
only happens on channels not in dolby digital
I have a 9200 PVR which occasionaaly turns itself on (powers up).
When I turn on the TV on it is always tuned to the Mpix game channel which I have never tuned to or used . Any ides regarding a fix??
Hi Brian -
Your issue sounds like one of your neighbours has a Bell UHF remote (wireless) set to the same frequency (channel) as your 9200. Try changing the frequency used by the second remote to see if the problem goes away.
