FOSS for Windows

*good* free software for windows, part I

So somebody you know (or yourself) gets a new computer and needs software. Instead of pirating copies of Office and other apps, there are several free alternatives…..

Here is the essential list of applications that you can use to build an almost free system.

1. Mozilla Firefox – Agreat web browser, and a secure replacement for Internet Explorer. Firefox blocks Spyware/Adware, pop-ups. It also has a great user interface with pop-ups, and hundreds of free extensions to make your web browsing experience more enjoyable.

2. Mozilla Thunderbird – A great replacement for MS Outlook. Thunderbird, like firefox has hundreds of extensions available, built in spam filter, roles, news reader. It’s also not vulnerable to the myriad of worms that circulate for outlook.

3. Open Office – One of the premier free applications. Open Office is a 100% free replacement for Microsoft Office. Including Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Presentaion, HTML Editor and more. It can open and write MS document formats, and also lets you save to PDF format natively, which is something that MS Office does not have!! Give it a try, you won’t be disapointed.

4. Lime Wire – A free, no spyware included Peer to Peer filesharing application.

5. iTunes – iTunes is by far the best music application on Windows or Mac. Very intuitive, the playlist organization just makes sense. It also lets you burn CD’s right from the interface. Note: iTunes isn’t opensource like the above applications, but its so good its worth mentioning.

6. Google Picasa – Google Picasa, a free image editor. Perfect for managing your photos, and editing them.

In part II we’ll get a bit more off the beaten path….

Testing over, welcome to the new site

October 13th, 2005

Considering that 2003 was my last update, I decided that I needed to do something to elimate any excuses for not updating my site. Solution: I installed wordpress. Its GNU (free, and PHP based). So now I have a fancy back end to keep everything current.

Stay tuned for lots of updates, and feel free to fire feedback off to: web at apeman dot org

thanks
